Why?

Despite numerous positive youth development initiatives and promising policies, many programs struggle to get youth in the doors. Of those that do come, it is often difficult to get them to stay.

Of the millions of vulnerable youth who desperately need positive youth developmental supports, few find meaningful participation in existing programs and services.

In the absence of a knowledge base about what programs can do to raise program participation, the Effective Youth Engagement Project (E-YEP) was created.

If you are familiar with the YDRF model, you know that we use a youth cultural competence approach to service delivery. In this model, Youth Cultural Competence (YCC) is a revolution in empowering youth programs.

This model effectively connects with youth and then utilizes the power of youth influence to produce and extend more positive program outcomes to their peers and other previously out of reach youth.

YCC is about understanding, embracing, and respecting the culture in which our youth population subscribes.

It is creating a learning environment for young people that is not sterile or absent of their cultural influences.

YCC is the under girding philosophy of the Effective Youth Engagement Project. It is the idea of creating recruitment and engagement strategies that: meet the interests of targeted groups; are executed by a well-trained staff; and consists of engaging activities designed to promote the importance of program completion, education, and workforce attachment.
